Side Pocket Results for June 26,2010

On the final event before the summer break our tournament which was held at the Side Pocket had a field of 16 players.

Wayne Bean from Maryland who has won this tournament twice already this season looked as though he was on his way to a third win!  Then enters a new comer Jeff Renner who with his handicap/spot was very competitive.

Doug Gram and David Donovan both strong contenders got knocked out in the early rounds. Chris Brunner with his strong play could not hold up against the play and spot given to Jeff and had to settle for 3rd place.

Wayne went undefeated to earn a spot for the hot seat. While Jeff losing to Wayne went to the one loss side where he somehow pulled off a series of big upsets to earn a rematch in the finals.

In the finals a “Real Nail Biter” the score went 2-2, then Wayne pulled ahead to go 3-2.  After that Jeff tied up the score at 3-3.  In game number 7 Jeff won and went ahead with the score 4-3. then he pulled ahead to 5-3.  At this point Wayne came back with two nice runs and tied it up 5-5, then goes ahead for a 6-5 lead and is on the hill. In game number 12 Jeff refused to give up and wins to make it 6-6 and somehow in the last minute of the last game Jeff makes a couple of key shots and pulls off the big upset!!

Congratulations to Jeff Renner who later stated that he had just recently lost his job and just wanted something to do on this day.  Everyone was sorry to hear about your job loss and apparently some were really sorry you did not have anything else to do on this day!  Just kidding and congratulations!

1st Place :  Jeff Renner            $150

2nd             Wayne Bean           $  65

The 4th stop of the year was held at the Side Pocket.

We had a nice turn out inspite of the fact that many of our regulars were out of town playing in a Moose Tournament.

Buddy Fountain played good from the start but eventually fell to a 3rd place finish.

Sheri Bruner got off to a slow start but then picked it up a notch to eventually land her 4th place.

Chris Bruner and John Newton (alias Jordan) both played great throughout the tournament but when they met in the finals it was all Chris.  Jordan was having problems hanging up some key balls and Chris was not missing anything. When the score reached 5 to 0 Jordan, who had already expressed total frustration, broke down his cue and forfeited the match.

Congratulations to the young gun Chris for first place!

The Playing Field was our host on this event which pulled 21 players. The field consisted of many regulars, some who haven’t shown up for a while and several new players.

Marianne Rinker got off to a good start winning her first 4 matches but then the wheels fell off and she lost the next two matches.

Scott Price who’s play swung back and forth from very good to fair seemed to let the rolls disturb his mental concentration and eventually settled for 3 rd place.

Penny Flammia overall played a very good tournament inspite of  some fatigue that set in early. He won several matches before losing to Jordan then in the left side of the bracket he won 6 matches to earn a rematch for the finals.  However in the finals exhaustion had set in and Jordan was playing great. With a final score of  7-4  Penny eventually settled for 2nd place.  Congradulations Penny.

Results 2/6/10 Murphy’s II

In the middle of our snow storm we still had 14 players show up for this event.  I believe some must have rented a sled with snow dogs. But as you know some pool players like taking risks and others just cannot stand to stay in the house when there is action!

Doug Grams made the trip all the way up from New Port New. Doug is a very strong “A” player but he got a little unlucky in his first match and after several bad rolls he was sent to the one loss side. Once on the left side he displayed some very impressive wins and eventually came in 4th place.

Casey and Cricket Blevins, first time with our tour, both did very well and had a great time.

John Newton ( Jordan) and Falon Farleigh (a couple) both had a good day and ended up playing each other in the semi-finals, where John sent Falon to the one loss side.  Falon playing very well came back for a rematch. In the finals Jordan jumped out to a 5-2 lead and then it appeared he got distracted and missed a couple of easy shots which Falon was quick to take advantage. Eventually Jordan reached the hill which made it 6 to 4 but could not close it.  Falon won the next 3 games and took home the $150 first prize.

1st Place  Falon Farleigh  $150

2nd            John Newton      $ 80

3rd             Doug Grams        $ 50

Shari Cunningham had a very good day with some big upsets and finally settled for third place.

Chris Brunner and John Newton both started out the race from the gate with very strong play and both wanted to be the in the winner’s circle.  In the semi finals Chris managed to send Jordan to the one loss side leaving Chris in the hot seat. On the one loss side Jordan playing with more determination then ever worked his way back to earn a place in the finals and a rematch. In the finals we so some great shot making and both of these players have a very exposive breakf!!! Everytime Chris broke it sounded like a shot gun going off!  The match was a nail bitter. Results 12/5/09 Murphy’s II

Murphy’s II rolled out the carpet to welcome our players and the competition was strong.

We had several new players including Yong Knapp.  This was her first time ever to play in a tournament and she even surprised herself by finishing in the top half of the field and most importantly she says she had alot of fun. Also we enjoyed the company of Jim Rowe, a first timer, who is a real gentleman and a good sport. We hope to see you more often

Bobby Hengle, always a top contender, played several strong matches, but then with a few bad rolls was knocked out earlier then expected. Bobby accepted his loss very graciously and stayed around for the Roulette Pill Game and to amuse the crowd with his sense of humor and discussions of good sportmanship as it relates to our sport.

David Donovan won his first couple of matches but then got sent to the one loss side.  There, with some very strong play, he made a run for the hot seat but eventually was upset by Mike Crowley in a hill/ hill set.  Mike managed to get one or two more good rolls but he also played very good through out the event.

Brian Stallard, another first timer, played great through out the event.  On his way to the hot seat, in his match against Frank Woodley he was down 6 games to 2 and took advantage of a few mistakes from Frank and came back to win the set.

Eventually it was Brian and Mike in the finals.  The match started with some very strong play from Mike who took an earl lead but then stalled and allowed Brian to catch his stroke and eventually Brian pulls out the upset with a 7-5 victory!

Congradulations to Brian for his victory and congradulations to Mike who had some outside distractions that seemed to be just enough to throw his game off a little.

1st place     Brian Stallard

2nd                Mike Crowley

3rd                 David Donovan

Brian and David ended the event by splitting the Roulette Pill Game pot!

We appreciate the great job from the staff at Murphy’s II

Mike did not like it on the left side of the bracket, and tightened up his game.  And, after knocking off several opponents, earned a place in the finals.  However, Charlie, on this day, proved to be the one who wanted it the most.  Charlie won the final match and was declared the overall winner!

·         Welcome and congratulations to Tommy Woodcock a new comer to our event. Tommy played extremely well and managed a 4th place finish. Not bad for his first time.

·         Joe Porter’s game was clicking fairly well and when he did run into trouble was able to use his knowledge of the game to get out of some tough spots. He hung tough and eventually managed several nice upsets which earned him a 3rd place finish.

·         Scott Price played very solid all day and sailed through to the hot seat on the winners side .

·         David Donovan got off to a very shaky start and was sent to the one loss side early by Tommy Woodcock.  However once on the one loss side David apparently realized he did not want to go down for the count and came back very strong. Winning his last 4 matches all with scores of 4 to 1 victories. Eventually earning a rematch with Tommy and this time pulled off the upset with a win of 4 to 1. Earning a spot in the finals.

·         In the finals Scott and David both played very good, with some great shot making and very few safeties played. However they both got a couple of undeserving bad rolls and  ultimately the match went hill/hill. After a scratch by David, Scott was able to run out from the six ball for the win!

·         We introduced a new version of the pill game called Pill Bottle Roulette and the players loved it!!! It gave everyone who participated something fun to do while waiting between matches. The game proved to consist of lots of luck and some skill and loads of fun!

Comments /High lights

  • Congratulations to Chris Pierce who played great and made very few mistakes through out the tournament and went through the winner’s side undefeated.
  • Marianne Rinker had a very good day and surprised many opponents with very strong play, for her ranking, making several very difficult long green shots at critical times to win.
  • Josh Dickerson, the winner of the last event and always a strong contender played good but could not get past his good friend David Donovan on the one lost side.  David was pocketing balls very well and making every bank shot, no matter how difficult, with ease.  However in the last game David surprised Josh with a conservative play, a safety that ultimately resulted in a win removing his good friend Josh from the tournament…
  • In the semi-finals David played a new comer Blas Orellana.  Blas had been steam rolling over his completion.  During this match the balls would not co-operate and therefore the layouts were not conducive to run outs.  Favoring aggressive shot making and much to David’s dislike the match became a battle of safeties.  However with forced patience and under pressure David was able to pull out a victory and Blas had to settle for 3rd place.
  • In the finals David had to spot one game on the wire and 1st break to Chris Pearce, which proved to be insurmountable.  David being a little too eager went for a couple difficult shots, which it turns out with the tight pockets, he should have and cost him the match.  Chris, who had played great, was patient and did not make any mistakes and won the event undefeated.

  • Gary Herrington and Carey Mcnamara both played very well in this event.   After many close matches Gary finished a strong 3rd and Carey settled for 4th place.
  • Sean Millican who went undefeated in our last event had his eye on taking two in a row.  However in the semi finals David Donovan managed to send him to the one loss side with a 5-2 win.   From there Sean ran through the one loss side determined not to let anyone stop him from a rematch for the finals.
  • In the finals David and Sean both displayed great shot making and excellent cue ball control.  David took an early 2-0 lead with Sean later closing the gap at 4-3.  From there it went back and forth with each player usually only getting one chance at the table. They each had several fantastic run outs, but in the end David closed out the match with the final score 7-4.

·        2nd                  Joey Mastermaker     $  45

·        3rd                  Charlie Knight             $  35

With summer vacations and other events we had a small field of 12 players but there was lots of enthusiasm and fun for all..

Congratulations to Paul Rinker, a regular on the tour, for his big win.  He has been placing strong for some time and finally was able to break the ice and take a first place finish.

The young Joey Mastermaker played extremely well to go undefeated in the winners bracket to earn the hot seat for the finals.

Paul Rinker was sent to the one loss bracket but worked his way back to play Joey for the finals which is  a race to 7 /single elimination.

The match started fairly even with Joey wining the first game and playing great. From there they traded games to 2-3 Paul .  Then Paul makes a 9 on the break and then everything went downhill for Joey. In the last 3 games of the match Joey hung up the 8 ball, hung up the 9 ball and scratched on the 9 ball. Paul said it wasn’t pretty but he was still pleased that even though nerves got to him he never gave up.
